Port Royal

April 20, 2011

I set up Port Royal in the summer of 1605 with Monts and the 60 settlers in Nova Scotia. Frankly I was more aggravated by the trade post than I was pleased by it. This was due to several factors, the main one being was that business was not as brisk as Monts had anticipated and he was constantly nagging me about changes which he didn’t need my approval for because I was his assistant. Due to fact that things with Port Royal weren’t going so well we eventually lost the trading monopoly we had on the fur over the native people. This all happened even though Port Royal was physically large and had lots of services to provide. Some of the buildings that were in Port Royal were a mill which planted a number of crops. Everyone knew that deep down Port Royal was doom. I did try things to keep Port Royal up and running, for example I started cooking club called the Company of Good Cheer. In that I held sort of a show where I would lead the chefs and bring in the food to the natives in a festive Manner. In 1607 me and my crew abandoned the settlement because there was nothing we could do to keep it up and we would have to start again. A few settlers were permitted to stay as long as they agreed not to work the fur trade. These settlers became highly skilled farmers and eventually formed the colony of Acadia.

Finding Quebec

December 15, 2010

On July third 1608  I discovered what is now known as Quebec.  I remember it like it was yesterday… me, Sieur De Monts (a French noble appointed by the king of France) and 60 settlers finally got off of our ship and took our first steps on Quebec.  I was so happy when I got off the boat because I was starting to get sick of water in fact at point I contemplated jumping off the ship. The reason we chose Quebec as the place where we set up our settlement was because, I could not find any more suitable or better situated than the point of Quebec, so called by the natives which was covered with nut trees.  After Cartier’s failure to establish a permanent French colony, along with the others of failures I was determined to be the one. Along with the pride of me knowing I would have been the first  was also given a monopoly in return for setting up a colony. I had no idea that was I was standing on that day would become something as great as what Quebec is right now. There must be lots of untapped resources lying in this land like gold for example. There is so much empty space and lots of lakes that it is hard to imagine what the land and resources will be used for. On the other hand we now have so much work ahead of us we have to build an entire settlement on this new land as fast as possible and I  personally do not like all the laborious tasks that comes with being an explorer. Although I feel as though I have made a deep connection with these 60 settlers and Monts through all of the hardships we have been through, so if everything we came here to accomplish fails at least I will have made some better connections with people.  What I didn’t know when I landed on Quebec is that it would lead me to setting up my first trading post in Nova Scotia called Port Royal.
